My primary artistic concern is in understanding how photographs ‘work’, that is, how the tones and colours in their intricate patterns come together to form apparently solid shapes.

I have been developing ways to turn my ideas into public art as it is normally only outside that there is enough space to view them properly. I have found a way of replacing the pixels in pictures with glass mosaic tiles; these have the widest range of colours, over 100. They are 20mm square and are totally light fast and waterproof.

This technique is ideal for educational projects as the designs made by the children could be translated directly into a digital mosaic, which could then become a mural in the playground. It could also be used in parks, gardens subways, swimming pools, restaurants, shop fronts, reception areas, in fact, almost anywhere.

This is a mock-up of a project in Peckham, the image is just an example, the final image, if it gets the go ahead, could be of almost anything.

This is a close-up of this mural. Please note that the colour range of the mosaic tiles is far greater than the range I have used here which I used for convenience.

I have also been developing a quarter tile method. This is best for small areas where it is not possible to stand well back from the image, see below.
